UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation this morning, standing outside 10 Downing Street.
In an emotional address, he said he accepts, with “good grace” that his Labor Party no longer believes he is the right person to lead them into the next election. The party will choose its next leader in September.
Labour support for Starmer weakened amid a scandal involving his former US ambassador’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
His departure would put Britain on course for its seventh premier in a decade, paving the way for Andy Burnham to replace him.
Burnham, who was elected to Parliament last week, is now eligible to launch a leadership challenge.
Just before the resignation, President Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that Starmer “will resign,” citing failures in immigration and energy policies. He specifically criticized the freeze on North Sea oil and gas exploration licenses and Starmer’s stance on wind farms.
