Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military to conduct exercises testing the readiness of tactical nuclear weapons, citing perceived threats from the US, UK and France.

These exercises will be overseen by the Russian navy, air force, and military units managing Crimea and other parts of Ukraine held by Putin’s forces.

The decision follows Russia’s recent advancement in eastern Ukraine.

Notably, it comes amidst NATO’s largest military exercise since the Cold War.

The Pentagon has criticized Putin’s move. Defense experts suggest it’s a signal to Ukraine’s allies about Russia’s preparedness.

The announcement also coincides with tensions over Western involvement in the Russia-Ukraine War.
