The Trump administration is reportedly considering a plan proposed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to buy the Chagos Islands directly from Mauritius, bypassing UK officials.
However, any purchase of the islands can take place only after the UK makes the territory sovereign.
The Chagos Islands are home to the US-UK Diego Garcia military base, located about 2,360 miles from Iran. The strategically important airbase can support long-range military operations and received UK approval in March to be used for strikes against Iranian missile launchers.
