President Donald Trump announced that the Board of Peace, which he created and leads, has reached an agreement for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.
A senior Hamas official confirmed to the BBC that the group had accepted the plan, with an official statement expected soon. Israel has yet to comment.
Under the agreement, Israeli troops will withdraw from the Gaza Strip as disarmament finishes. It will make way for a new Palestinian government and police force, supported by the International Stabilization Force.
The potential breakthrough in ending the Israel-Gaza war still has several obstacles. Hamas says it will lay down weapons only if Israeli forces exit the region and agree to establish a Palestinian state.
However, Israel’s current government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, continues to oppose the creation and recognition of a Palestinian state.
