The White House announced there are no plans for President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet “in the immediate future,” canceling the two leaders’ potential meeting in Hungary this month.
While Trump had previously spoken about a possible meeting with Putin, discussions are now limited to advisers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s Monday call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was deemed sufficient.
The Kremlin also downplayed any talk of a summit, saying no date had ever been set. President Trump emphasized he doesn’t want a “wasted meeting.”
Trump and Putin had last met in Alaska in August.
Meanwhile, the US recently decided not to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, citing the need to support ongoing peace efforts—even as the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains unresolved.
