President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to cover issues, including China’s ties with Iran and Russia
President Donald Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing this week for high-stakes talks on Iran, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, and trade, as both sides seek to stabilize strained relations.
Trump will arrive on Wednesday for his first visit to China since 2017, with meetings scheduled over two days.
US officials said the countries may announce new trade and investment forums, while China is expected to increase purchases of Boeing aircraft, US farm products, and energy supplies. The leaders will also discuss extending a rare earth minerals agreement that eased tensions in their trade war.
The talks are expected to cover issues, including China’s ties with Iran and Russia, rising tensions over Taiwan, nuclear weapons, and the risks linked to advanced AI systems.
Meanwhile, China’s gold production fell in the first quarter of 2026 as stricter safety inspections forced some smelters to halt operations for maintenance.
The China Gold Association said total gold production from domestic and imported raw materials reached 136.23 metric tons, down 3.3% from a year earlier. Domestic production dropped 7.1% to 81.065 tons.
Despite lower output, demand for gold bars and coins surged 46.4% to 202.062 tons as investors sought safer assets.
