The United States carried out a second wave of airstrikes on Iran on Wednesday after Tehran threatened to block major oil export routes in response to the US maritime blockade on Iranian ports.

The Central Command (CENTCOM) said the attacks targeted Iranian military assets used to threaten commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

CENTCOM also reported stopping an unladen oil tanker heading toward Iran’s Kharg Island, saying the vessel ignored repeated warnings and attempted to breach the blockade.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned that regional oil and gas export routes could be shut if the US maritime blockade continued.

The latest military action follows renewed fighting between the two countries, with both sides exchanging strikes in recent days.

Rising tensions have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes, increasing concerns over global energy markets.
