Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Europe yesterday. His first trip to the continent in five years signals a shift in EU-China relations. Once welcomed with grandeur in 2019, this time, Xi faces skepticism and mounting concerns in the bloc.

Xi’s six-day visit coincides with heightened tensions between China and the European Union, with recent trade investigations and espionage allegations casting a shadow over bilateral relations.

Through this trip, Xi is looking at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.

But there are hurdles
The European Union launched trade investigations into China’s wind turbines and procurement of medical equipment. Offices of the Chinese security equipment maker Nuctech were raided as part of an investigation into subsidies.

Germany and the UK have also seen issues related to alleged espionage by China, resulting in the arrest of at least six individuals.

Facing challenging discussions in France on trade and Ukraine, Xi anticipates a warmer reception in Serbia and Hungary.
