Thousands of mourners dressed in black filled the streets of Tehran on Monday for the funeral procession of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the US-Israeli airstrike on February 28.

Crowds lined the streets, chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans. A Reuters image showed a hanging effigy of President Donald Trump. Many wept and called for revenge for the military strikes that killed Khamenei and several members of his family.

Following the ceremony in Tehran, Khamenei’s coffin will travel to holy sites in Iran and Iraq before returning to the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad for burial on Thursday.

The funeral comes at a time of heightened ceasefire tensions between the US, Iran, and Israel. Talks between Washington and Tehran have been suspended during the mourning period.
