A fire engulfed Copenhagen’s historic 17th-century Old Stock Exchange (Borsen) building yesterday, destroying its iconic spire. The blaze destroyed much of the interiors.

While no casualties were reported, the fire’s cause remains unknown.

Borsen held significant cultural and historical importance. Denmark’s royal family and government expressed sadness at the loss.

Brian Mikkelsen, chief of the Danish Chamber of Commerce, headquartered in Borsen, was seen with his staff assisting emergency services in salvaging priceless artworks and valuables from the building. The country’s defense minister compared the destruction to the fire that damaged Notre Dame in Paris, France, in 2019.

There are plans to restore the Old Stock Exchange’s dragon spire, a symbol of Denmark’s trading legacy.
