UNESCO has voted to officially add the humble baguette, an important symbol of France, to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list, celebrating “the French way of life.”

The “artisanal know-how and culture of baguette bread” is now one among a list of 600 traditions from around 130 countries.

Algerian Rai music and Tunisia’s harissa condiment contended alongside the French baguette to receive the cultural status.

The international recognition from the UN cultural body is a tribute to the “tradition” and “craftsmanship” of making the baguette. The country’s baking industry is ecstatic as they can now apply for funds to keep the traditional way of preparing the bread intact.

Baguette is France’s staple and has held an important position in the French diet for at least a century. After all, the nation prepares around 16 million loaves per day—despite the decrease in consumption over the last few decades.
