Iran buried former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the country’s holiest Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on Friday, ending a week of nationwide mourning.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
Thousands of mourners filled the streets as Khamenei’s coffin, draped in Iran’s national flag, traveled through his hometown. Reuters reports indicate that people were holding up placards reading “Kill Trump.”
The ceremony took place amid renewed strikes between the US and Iran. The Middle East nation is also navigating a major leadership transition and dealing with the aftermath of the war.
Mojtaba, Khamenei’s son and the country’s new Supreme Leader, did not attend the funeral and is hidden from the public eye while recovering from injuries sustained in the same strike that killed his father.
Khamenei led Iran for 37 years, shaping the country’s political, military and religious direction. His death leaves the Islamic Republic facing economic strain, regional tensions and uncertainty over its future leadership.
