Israel’s security cabinet on Friday backed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan for the military to take control of Gaza City.

The decision comes despite opposition from military officials, international pressure, and protests from families of hostages. Critics warn the move could escalate the conflict with Hamas.

Netanyahu argues the operation is crucial to “remove Hamas” before transferring control of the territory to civilian authorities.

Mass protests erupted nationwide as the cabinet met. Netanyahu’s office said an “overwhelming majority” of ministers rejected alternative plans they felt wouldn’t defeat Hamas or bring hostages home.
