Disney is reportedly planning on a fresh round of layoffs, the first under new CEO Josh D’Amaro, that would eliminate approximately 1,000 people, mainly in the recently consolidated marketing department.
The entertainment giant employs around 231,000 people and has already cut around 8,000 roles since 2022. It continues with job cuts as it transitions from traditional linear television to the lower-margin world of streaming.
The Mouse House faces intense competition in streaming from Google and Amazon, which own YouTube and Prime Video, respectively.
While the new job eliminations were decided before D’Amaro took over, he is prioritizing freeing up capital for digital growth. His first week as CEO was marked by several setbacks for Disney’s AI and gaming deals.
