A federal judge in New Hampshire blocked President Donald Trump’s order to limit birthright citizenship, calling it “highly questionable” under the 14th Amendment.
Judge Joseph Laplante ruled on July 10 that the plaintiffs—immigrant families—could proceed as a class, enabling him to issue a nationwide injunction.
His decision temporarily halts the order, which was set to take effect July 27, and pauses enforcement for seven days to allow appeals.
The judge warned that denying babies US citizenship would cause “irreparable harm.” The White House called the ruling an unlawful overreach. Over 150,000 children born annually could be affected by Trump’s policy if it proceeds.
