AT&T confirmed that a procedural error caused the massive outage|Bill Bradford|CC BY 2.0

AT&T faced a widespread network outage Thursday, disrupting calls, texts, and internet access for countless customers across the nation. Service was restored after roughly 11 hours.

The disruption primarily impacted cities like Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles.

AT&T confirmed that a procedural error, rather than a cyberattack, caused the massive outage. Verizon and T-Mobile reported minor disruptions but were largely unaffected.

While concerns arose regarding 911 access, emergency services advised against unnecessarily testing lines.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initiated an immediate investigation into the outage, focusing on uncovering its root cause.

Despite AT&T’s commercial network faltering, its FirstNet service for first responders remained operational.
