Discussions on net neutrality are back after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), led by Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, voted to go ahead with internet regulation proposals yesterday.

The drafts will open for public comments soon and a vote on enacting the rules could take place in early 2024.

What does it mean for you?
If the FCC succeeds, high-speed internet could be considered as one of the utilities like water and electricity regulated in America.

It would also mean broadband service providers cannot hike internet plan prices and block or slow down services like Google and Netflix on their networks.

Not happy
Naturally, telecom companies like AT&T and Verizon are not happy about the proposed regulations. They feel federal oversight will strain their services.

But the Democrat-led FCC feels otherwise. It decided to bring back net neutrality talks due to the increased reliance of the public on the internet, especially during the pandemic.

However, the two GOP commissioners are against it and claim that new restrictions could negatively impact the telecom industry.
