CBS announced Thursday that it is canceling The Late Show With Stephen Colbert next May, ending the program that has been a late-night staple for decades.

The network stated the decision comes during a “challenging backdrop in late night.”

Colbert told his audience he was informed just a day earlier. He clarified that he is not being replaced, and this marks the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS.

However, the timing of it raised eyebrows. Just this week, host Colbert slammed the $16 million settlement reached between Paramount (CBS’s parent) and President Donald Trump.

He called the deal a “big fat bribe,” alluding to Paramount’s pending sale to Skydance Media, which requires federal approval.

CBS insists the move is purely financial and unrelated to Colbert’s content or performance.

Critics, including Senators Adam Schiff and Elizabeth Warren, questioned whether the show’s end was politically motivated.
