Republicans insisted Democrats must first accept their seven-week stopgap funding bill before deeper talks can happen|Martin Falbisoner|CC BY-SA 3.0
Democrats and Republicans left the White House without a deal Monday night, raising fears of a government shutdown just 36 hours away.
Top Democrats pressed President Donald Trump to restore billions in healthcare spending as part of any funding agreement, but they admitted no breakthrough occurred.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump seemed to hear about some healthcare consequences “for the first time,” hinting at possible openings for a deal.
Still, Republicans insisted Democrats must first accept their seven-week stopgap funding bill before deeper talks can happen.
Vice President JD Vance argued Democrats’ approach was unreasonable, warning against using a shutdown as leverage. House Speaker Mike Johnson reinforced GOP demands for a temporary extension through late November.
The Senate plans another vote on the GOP bill, but with a 53–47 split, Republicans lack the 60 votes needed. Without action, the government will partially shut down at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.
