New York City Mayor Eric Adams ended his reelection campaign on Sunday, citing “constant media speculation” and the now-dismissed federal corruption case as the main reasons.

Adams said the scandal has made it impossible to raise money and run a serious campaign. He did not endorse a successor and warned “insidious forces” are creating “chaos” in city politics.

His exit shakes up the race, potentially boosting Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, 33. If elected, he would be NYC’s youngest and most liberal mayor in generations.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Mamdani backer, praised Adams’ four-year tenure, saying he left the city “better than he inherited it.”
