The Trump administration has confirmed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a signature project under President Donald Trump, is now shut down.

Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor said the unit no longer exists as a centralized agency.

Elon Musk launched DOGE in January to streamline government operations. It closed more than eight months early, after Musk exited in May.

The initiative made sweeping early cuts, reducing budgets and altering agency priorities. However, it failed to deliver the massive savings it promised. DOGE projected $1 trillion in reductions, but analysts say even its claimed $214 billion is overstated.

A Brookings review found that DOGE fired thousands of essential staffers, only to hire many of them back due to lawsuits or national security concerns.

Now, agencies are scrambling to rebuild teams and recover lost expertise. Experts warn that DOGE’s rapid cuts caused more chaos than efficiency gains, and their impact will be felt for years.
