Federal prosecutors have told former President Donald Trump’s lawyers that he is the target of a probe into his handling of classified documents after leaving the office, in a sign he might be indicted.

The office of special counsel Jack Smith sent the letter, various media outlets reported.

The news came after Trump’s lawyers met with the Justice Department attorneys on Monday, giving the clearest sign yet that prosecutors are moving toward charging the former president. Trump has already been indicted in a separate case.

The inquiry centers on whether Trump broke laws after over 300 files with classified markings were discovered at Mar-a-Lago.
