President Donald Trump signed two executive orders yesterday aimed at limiting birthright citizenship.
He said the move was prompted by the Supreme Court’s “very unfair” June decision that rejected his broader effort to end automatic citizenship for all children born in the country.
The orders seek to limit automatic citizenship for some groups, including children of foreign embassy personnel and people Trump has referred to as participating in “birth tourism.”
Trump said the new measures would allow his administration to crack down more aggressively on abuse of the immigration system.
White House officials warned that people who hide their true reason for visiting the US could face visa denials for fraud. Legal experts expect the executive orders to face court challenges.
