Every year since 1999, Pantone, the color system labeler, names a shade that captures the cultural zeitgeist and sets trends for the coming season. This year, that color is white.
It is called “Cloud Dancer,” and Pantone describes it as a “billowy” shade of white. Executive director Leatrice Eiseman explained that in an increasingly fast-paced society dominated by technology, this white provides a “calming influence,” and is “associated with new beginnings.”
However, people online seem to think differently. Some have questioned whether white is even a color, and others call the selection “bleak,” “boring,” with one commenter jokingly comparing it to “unseasoned chicken.”
Critics are also calling the move “tone deaf,” given the rising discussions about white nationalism in recent times and companies slashing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the past year.
Pantone officials responded to the controversy by defending the selection process. Vice President Laurie Pressman told the Washington Post that skin tones were not a factor in the choice, noting that similar questions had arisen with previous years’ colors, such as Peach Fuzz and Mocha Mousse.
