The Senate approved a $95.3 billion foreign aid package that would support Ukraine’s defense, enhance Israel’s missile systems and initiate the sale of Chinese-owned TikTok in the US.
The decision followed months of debate, revealing divisions within the Republican Party over support for Ukraine and Israel. However, the bill received bipartisan support from the Senate yesterday.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer credited the White House and lawmakers for advancing the measure.
What is in the legislation?
- Ukraine stands to receive the largest share, approximately $60 billion, primarily for military support against Russian aggression.
- Israel is designated $26.3 billion to fortify its missile defense systems and regional operations, alongside humanitarian aid for Gaza.
- The aid package will also provide military assistance to other US allies.
- The bill also forces a sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner ByteDance or face a national ban.
The bill now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature. He expressed his plans to sign it into law.
