After more than seven years leading the league, Cathy Engelbert will leave her role as the WNBA’s commissioner at the end of 2026.

Engelbert took charge in 2019 and helped push the WNBA into a new era of growth.

As the league’s first commissioner, Engelbert oversaw rapid growth, with viewership soaring and the WNBA expanding its number of teams.

Under her leadership, the WNBA secured a major media deal and saw the average franchise value climb sharply, from $10 million in 2019 to $460 million today, according to ESPN.

A new collective bargaining agreement also paved the way for players to earn seven-figure salaries.

But Engelbert also faced mounting criticism from players over pay and the league’s handling of harassment. She also faced disputes over officiating and transgender participation.

Engelbert said she made the decision herself and wants to spend more time with her family. The WNBA will begin searching for her replacement.
