FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces pressure as Europe’s soccer governing body UEFA is reportedly preparing criminal claims against him in Switzerland.
The potential action centers on a now-abandoned proposal to sell a 20% stake in future World Cup profits to private investors.
Under the plan, FIFA would have created a commercial arm valued at about $20 billion. UEFA has reportedly criticized that valuation as far too low, arguing that the structure could benefit Infantino and a small group of associates.
New York investment firm Thrive Capital—founded by Joshua Kushner—was lined up as the anchor investor to acquire a significant stake in the entity.
However, FIFA walked back on the idea after severe backlash from the public and major soccer bodies. The controversy also contributed to the resignation of Infantino’s senior adviser, Carlos Cordeir.
UEFA could now seek criminal action against other FIFA officials involved in the proposal.
