The FIFA World Cup final was viewed by over 62.8 million people across the United States, making it the most-watched final of the tournament and soccer broadcast in US history.
The match saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in extra time to claim the title for the second time. It was also the most-viewed soccer match in Spanish-language media, says Telemundo.
Fox drew nearly 39 million viewers for its English-language coverage, while Telemundo attracted almost 24 million viewers.
Streaming also fueled the record audience, as Fox One and Peacock added millions of new subscribers during the tournament.
The World Cup’s popularity received another boost from the tournament being hosted in the US, strong performances by the American men’s team, and wider streaming access.
The record-breaking audience is expected to increase the value of media rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with several major media companies reportedly preparing to bid.
