The Chicago Bears beat the San Francisco 49ers 19-10 in pounding rain on a sodden new home turf at Soldier Field on Sunday, with some calling it an “ugly game.”

Northeastern Illinois, including Chicago’s northern metro area, was in the middle of a flash flood warning when the 49ers’ NFL road opener kicked off.

Outside the stadium, viaducts were flooded, water was surging into basements, and cars were stranded on submerged streets.

“The field was soaked with puddles and standing water, producing an ugly game,” which was “often difficult to make out on the Fox broadcast” due to the heavy rain, San Francisco’s SF Gate wrote, while referring to the playing conditions as “shocking.”
