America’s largest memory chip maker, Micron Technology, is spending $50 billion to expand its 450-acre campus and build two 600,000-square-foot chip factories.

Both facilities will be running by 2028, and the first plant will begin producing advanced DRAM memory chips in 2027. The company is also building a $100 billion semiconductor complex near Syracuse.

The expansion comes as artificial intelligence fuels the biggest memory-chip shortage in more than four decades.

Demand for high-bandwidth memory, used in AI systems designed by companies such as Nvidia, has surged.

Micron’s gross margins have climbed from 18.5% in early 2024 to 56% in its latest quarter, and the company expects them to reach 68%.

Micron says it is racing to add capacity but cautions that increasing supply will take time.
