It is projected that 61.4 million people will travel by car between June 27 and July 5

According to AAA, a record-breaking 72 million people were expected to travel during the Fourth of July holiday period, with road travel accounting for the majority of trips.

The transportation analytics company INRIX advises travelers to leave before 10 a.m. to avoid traffic. Those returning on Sunday would see the worst traffic from noon to 6 p.m.

Air travel has also surged. American Airlines expected to carry 8.1 million passengers on more than 80,000 flights between June 25 and July 6, while United Airlines anticipated serving around 6 million passengers during the same period.
