London Mayor Sadiq Khan unveiled plans to make Oxford Street a permanent, traffic-free, pedestrian-only zone to boost the local economy.

The 1.2-mile stretch has prohibited buses, cars, taxis, cycles, scooters and pedicabs. It aims to be like other world-famous retail destinations like Times Square and the Champs-Elysees. Upgrades for 2027 include over 50 new trees, 100 new seats, two public squares, among several other additions.

The iconic shopping street currently attracts around 500,000 visitors every day and hosts major retail brands like Tiffany & Co. It has faced notable setbacks since the COVID-19 pandemic, including the closure of flagship stores like Topshop and House of Fraser.

City officials project the vehicle-free shift could boost economic growth by over $90 million annually and create more than 700 jobs.
