Tropical storm Lala left thousands of Hawaii residents without electricity Sunday after bringing heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous flooding across the islands.
More than 180,000 customers remained without power as crews worked to restore service. Oahu saw major improvements after outages there topped 220,000 earlier in the day.
The storm also damaged at least 100 homes and caused severe flooding in several communities. Rising water swept away two homes, while one person died in a vehicle-related accident.
Lala weakened after passing near the Big Island and continued moving toward Kauai with winds of about 65 mph. Officials kept a tropical storm warning in place and urged people to remain indoors.
Airports across Hawaii reopened, but officials warned travelers to check with airlines for possible changes. Forecasters expected the storm to leave the islands by Monday morning.
