Republican congressman, George Santos, who is facing fraud charges at home, admitted to theft in Brazil and signed a deal with authorities to drop criminal charges in a 2008 case.
Santos, when he was 19, spent about $700 using a false name and stolen cheques in the city of Niteroi in Brazil to buy items at a shop, including a pair of trainers. The case was revived after Santos took office in the US.
He confessed on Thursday and was given 30 days to pay $2,000 in fines and $2,800 to the shopkeeper.
