El Chapo claims to be experiencing “psychological torment” in the "supermax" US jail|2017 Ted Psahos|Public Domain

The convicted Sinaloa cartel founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman requested the Mexican president to help escape the alleged “psychological torment” he is experiencing in the “supermax” prison in Colorado.

The plea—sent to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador through El Chapo’s lawyers—asks El Chapo to be allowed to serve the rest of his life sentence in Mexico. The message was described as an “SOS” by his attorneys.

Guzman was given a life sentence in 2019 by the US under the charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and illegal weapon offenses. He is serving the sentence at a prison in Florence, Colorado.

The request also states that El Chapo spends most of his time alone and very little time outside. President Lopez Obrador says he will consider the request though it is unclear if he has the power to do so.
