More than 90% of the DC homicides were committed through gunfire
Washington DC experienced a surge in homicides last year, recording 274 confirmed victims—the highest number since 1997. The country’s capital had the fifth-highest murder rate among major US cities.
A report by the Washington Post points out,
- The District saw a rate of 40 homicides per 100,000 residents, with Black people in underserved neighborhoods being disproportionately affected.
- More than 90% of the killings were by gunfire.
- 19 children and teenagers were killed, and 106 were hit by bullets.
The report reflects a citywide crisis with federal officials questioning if DC can prevent a return to the high crime rates of the late 20th century.
