Homicide rates in American cities are experiencing a remarkable decline, approaching levels seen before the pandemic. Crime data analyst Jeff Asher reported a 20% drop in homicides across 133 cities from January to March compared to 2023.

Philadelphia stands out with a notable 35% decrease, while New York and Columbus recorded a 15% and 58% drop in homicides, respectively.

These decreases echo trends from the late 1990s. They reflect increased police engagement, resurgence of community-based crime prevention programs and decreased social unrest nationwide.

However, some cities like Denver, Los Angeles and Portland have reported rises in homicides, mainly due to disruptions in law enforcement operations and social unrest following high-profile incidents of police violence.

Notably, public perception of crime remains a concern, particularly regarding the drug trade.
