The FBI discovered more than 150 homemade bombs on a Virginia farm recently in what is believed to be the largest such seizure in the department’s history. It happened during a raid following the arrest of Brad Kenneth Spafford, 36, on a firearms charge.
The finished explosives were found at Spafford’s Isle of Wight County farm. The devices included pipe bombs found in a detached garage and a backpack labeled “#nolivesmatter,” a reference to an extremist movement that promotes violence.
Federal prosecutors allege Spafford used images of President Joe Biden for target practice. Meanwhile, his defense lawyers argue there’s no evidence he planned violent acts and called for his immediate release.
A federal judge initially agreed to his release with conditions but decided to keep him in detention while government lawyers appeal the decision. More charges are expected as the case progresses.
