Two teenagers accused of throwing homemade explosives during a protest near New York City’s mayoral residence told investigators they were inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS), an extremist group.

Authorities arrested the 18-year-old and 19-year-old on Saturday during clashes between anti-Islam protesters and counterprotesters outside the Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Prosecutors charged the suspects with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and using a weapon of mass destruction. A judge ordered both to be held without bail.

Investigators say one suspect threw a jar-sized device containing the explosive chemical TATP into a crowd. The device failed to detonate. He allegedly tried to deploy a second device before police tackled and arrested him.

Officials say the suspects claimed they were planning an attack “even bigger” than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
