National Security spokesperson John Kirby did not elaborate on the weapon’s capabilities or whether America has a defense strategy against it

The US National Security spokesperson, John Kirby, confirmed that Russia possesses a “troubling” anti-satellite weapon (ASAT) that hasn’t been deployed yet and cannot directly cause “physical destruction” on Earth.

Kirby did not elaborate on the weapon’s capabilities or whether America has a defense strategy against it.

His statement follows a call from House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner to declassify information about the ASAT system he considers a “serious national security threat.”

ASATs are dangerous because they can wipe out essential technologies like GPS if satellites are attacked. It can also cause space debris that NASA claims endangers the International Space Station, its crew, and other satellites.
