California has passed a new law requiring all streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and YouTube, to keep the volume of their commercials at the same level as the program they follow.

Proposed by Tom Umberg, a California state senator, the bill was inspired by complaints about loud streaming ads disturbing sleeping babies.

Signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the law extends existing FCC rules—which have applied to TV broadcasters since 2010—to online platforms for the first time.

With most of the major streamers based in California, the law could influence national standards for ad volume control across OTT platforms in America.
