The US is deploying large numbers of fighter jets to the Middle East, amassing its largest airpower presence there since the 2003 Iraq War. The move positions its forces for possible strikes on Iran as soon as this weekend.
President Donald Trump has not decided whether to attack or pursue diplomacy. Options range from further hitting Iran’s nuclear program, its ballistic missiles, and accompanying launch sites to targeting the regime.
Several administration officials doubt a diplomatic breakthrough with Tehran is possible. Indirect talks Tuesday in Geneva produced agreement on “guiding principles,” Iran’s foreign minister said, while US officials cited progress but added that big gaps remain.
