EU regulators fined Meta $1.3 billion for transferring European citizens’ data to the US|Nk621|CC BY-SA 4.0

In the largest of its kind, Facebook parent Meta was fined a record $1.3 billion by European Union regulators for transferring its user data to the US and storing it.

The reason
Just as the US thinks TikTok is providing its citizens’ user data to the Chinese government, Europe is concerned that Meta is mishandling the information of its people and that US spy agencies can access that data.

The ruling was made by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) yesterday. The fine is accompanied by an order to stop such transfers.

The EU and the US are in the process of negotiating a new deal on data transfer that could come into play as late as October.
