Israel and Palestine militants declare ceasefire

Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza agreed to a truce late Sunday night.

The ceasefire raised hopes to end the most recent violence on the Gaza frontier in more than a year.

Over the weekend
On Friday, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 44 people in Palestine. In response to the strikes, militants in Gaza fired close to 700 rockets into Israel.

Tensions flared in Jerusalem as some rockets were aimed at the holiest site in the city for Jews. The Israeli military said they countered the rockets using the Israeli air defense missiles averting damage.
