Mount Semeru, the tallest volcano in Java island, Indonesia, erupted on Sunday with a 15 km ash spew, prompting evacuations of almost 2,000 residents in East Java province.

Authorities issued the highest warning in the area.

Mount Semeru lies around 400 miles southeast of the capital Jakarta. The volcano began erupting at 2:46 am local time Sunday.

Unlike the previous year’s incident that claimed 50 lives and relocated thousands, so far, Indonesia’s disaster management agency (BNPB) has not reported any casualties or injuries due to the eruption.

According to Indonesia’s transport ministry, air travel is intact but two regional airports have received notices to be on alert.
