The world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa in Hawaii, began spewing lava for the first time in nearly 40 years, ending its longest recorded dormant period in history.

The eruption that started Sunday night is not a threat to the population, says the US Geological Survey, however, the Hawaiian residents were warned of the volcanic ashes and gases in the air. There are no evacuation orders issued, as the lava remained in the summit area.
