Russian President Vladimir Putin recently signaled that the four-year conflict in Ukraine may be nearing its end.
Speaking to reporters, he said, “I think that the matter is coming to an end.”
Despite earlier vows of victory during a scaled-back Victory Day parade on May 9, Putin expressed a willingness to negotiate new European security arrangements, naming former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder as a preferred partner.
Putin’s remarks follow a period of extreme tension that has strained Russia’s $3 trillion economy and resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties.
The Trump administration saw a recent breakthrough as both sides supported a three-day ceasefire from Saturday to Monday. This temporary truce includes a significant agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners.
Russia currently controls just under one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.
