Tragedy struck on Sunday at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, when two gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah event, resulting in the country’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly 30 years.

The attack killed 15 people and injured over three dozen people. Local media identified the suspects as Sajid Akram, 50, and his son, Naveed Akram, 24. They opened fire at a Hanukkah event at the beach at 9:30 a.m. local time on Monday morning.

Organized by the international Jewish group Chabad, hundreds had gathered for a Chanukah by the Sea event marking the first night of Hanukkah.

Sajid Akram was fatally shot at the beach, while his son remains in critical condition.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese denounced the attack, calling it “evil” that deliberately targeted the Jewish community amid mounting concern over rising antisemitic violence in Australia and worldwide.
