Police say a man armed with a rifle allegedly started a wildfire on Canfield Mountain in northern Idaho on Sunday, then ambushed and shot at firefighters, killing two and injuring one.
The attack began around 2 p.m., shortly after the first fire report at 1:21 p.m.
Officers exchanged fire with the suspect. Authorities tracked a cell phone signal and later found a body believed to be the shooter, with a weapon nearby.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris called it a deliberate ambush, stating the firefighters “did not have a chance.”
Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the “heinous assault.” Investigators suspect the gunman is not the one who called 911.
More weapons may be uncovered as the fire-damaged scene is examined.
