At least five people are dead and eight are injured after a man rammed his vehicle into a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, and opened fire during Sunday service.
Police identified the gunman as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford from nearby Burton. Armed with an assault rifle, Sanford fired at worshippers before officers fatally shot him in the church’s parking lot within minutes of the first 911 call.
Authorities said Sanford also set the church on fire using an accelerant, reducing the building to ruins.
Investigators continue to search the debris for possible additional victims. They also found up to three improvised devices at the scene.
The FBI has taken over the investigation, calling the incident “an act of targeted violence,” and is urging the public to share tips. Officials praised worshippers who shielded children and first responders who arrived in seconds.
